Yes, be abreast with current happenings but please keep a check on what's going in the system. Filter it out what things should affect you in which way.

Don't give all of your time to social media.
Read books. Pick a genre you like the most. And then just begin this journey of reading.
If you happen to live in area deprived of local library or books unavailability, there are innumerable resources online.
